Kusama (KSM) is a public blockchain network built on the same codebase as Polkadot. It serves as a canary network, meaning it operates under real economic conditions but functions as an experimental environment where developers can test and deploy new features before they reach Polkadot. This faster, less restricted setup allows projects to iterate quickly and take risks that would be unsuitable on a production network. Kusama is community-governed with no central authority and plays a key role in the broader Polkadot ecosystem as a proving ground for parachains and protocol upgrades.
