Namecoin (NMC) is a decentralized domain name registry and one of the earliest cryptocurrencies, forking Bitcoin in 2011. It allows users to register censorship-resistant .bit domains on a distributed blockchain, removing reliance on centralized DNS servers controlled by governments or corporations. Namecoin was the first cryptocurrency to implement Auxiliary Proof of Work, enabling simultaneous mining with Bitcoin. It also introduced NameID, a decentralized identity system combining Namecoin with OpenID. Maintained by an open-source community following its founder's disappearance, Namecoin remains a foundational project in decentralized internet infrastructure and blockchain-based naming systems.
