Primecoin (XPM) is a cryptocurrency developed by Sunny King, the creator of Peercoin and inventor of proof-of-stake consensus. What sets Primecoin apart is its unique proof-of-work mining algorithm, which discovers previously unknown prime number chains as a byproduct of securing the network. This gives the mining process real mathematical value beyond simply validating transactions, making the network energy-multiuse compared to Bitcoin. Primecoin also processes transactions roughly ten times faster than Bitcoin. It remains a notable experiment in applying cryptocurrency mining toward scientifically meaningful computation.
