About Nem
NEM (XEM) is a blockchain platform launched in March 2015, designed to improve upon the limitations of earlier cryptocurrency networks. It introduced several notable innovations, including user-defined tokens called mosaics, namespaces, multisignature accounts, and a peer-to-peer reputation system based on EigenTrust++. Its most distinctive feature is the Proof of Importance consensus mechanism, which rewards active network participation rather than simply favoring large token holders. NEM's core client, NIS, is written in Java. Development has since evolved toward a merger with Symbol, a next-generation blockchain platform building on NEM's foundational architecture.
