Zcash (ZEC) is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency built on its own proof-of-work blockchain. What sets it apart is its use of zero-knowledge proofs, specifically zk-SNARKs, which allow transactions to be verified without revealing sender, receiver, or amount details. Users can choose between transparent and fully shielded private transactions through Unified Addresses. Zcash was created in 2016 by a team of cryptographers who originally developed the Zerocoin protocol. With a fixed supply and halving schedule similar to Bitcoin, the network is maintained by independent development teams funded through block rewards.
